Performance Fact Sheet

The Kurt Weill Foundation for Music is proud to announce a new category of professional performance grants (requests over $5,000), for which there is no application deadline.

Criteria for awards under this category include applicant's prior record of achievement, feasibility of the project, and the project's relevance and value to the goals of the Kurt Weill Foundation. Examples of recommended requests include funds for soloists, orchestra fees, and extra rehearsals for musical productions; for curatorial and transportation expenses for international exhibitions; for expenses incurred in international arts festivals in which Weill's music is a significant component.

Proposals for awards of less than $5,000 must be submitted according to the original category of "Professional Performance Grant." Only applications for award of more than $5,000 (no maximum limit) may be submitted under this category.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Applications are accepted at any time. To apply, professional organizations should contact Foundation staff at the earliest stages of the project.
  2. If a significant component of the performing forces are students or volunteers, the application is ineligible under this category; it must be submitted under the College/University category of the general guidelines.
  3. Foundation staff will advise the applicant regarding submission of supporting materials and help to shape the project and proposal. Supporting materials must include a detailed description of the project, curriculum vitae of artistic personnel, profiles of the organization(s) involved, and a detailed, itemized budget.
  4. Proposals from professional opera companies, theater companies, dance companies, and concert groups should demonstrate that requested funds will be used to improve the musical qualities of the performance.
  5. Only performances of Kurt Weill's original works are eligible, and should promise musical excellence and authenticity.
  6. Productions of The Threepenny Opera are ineligible for funding.
  7. While performances of Kleine Dreigroschenmusik are normally not eligible for funding, programs of larger scope that also include other Weill works may be funded.
  8. The Foundation encourages large-scale projects (workshops, festivals, performances including symposia, weekend and month-long programs, etc.) comprising various media (concerts, stage performances and films) that feature the work of Kurt Weill. Exhibitions which deal with cultural and historical issues (of which Weill is a part) are also eligible.

Evaluation Procedures

Foundation staff will advise on formal submission procedures and will convene an independent Advisory Panel to evaluate the application. The Advisory Panel will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees or its Executive Committee. Normally the review process will take at least three months. All applications and inquiries should be addressed to:
