A rare coincidence: two world-renowned opera singers give recitals prominently featuring Weill songs on the same day. Angela Denoke offers six Weill songs as part of a Weimar-era song program, “Städtbewohner,” at Oper Stuttgart. Simon Keenlyside, at the Vienna Konzerthaus, programs three Weill songs, two from Broadway, in his evening of theater songs from both sides of the Atlantic, “Blue Skies.” They work with their regular ensembles to ensure smooth, expert performances.

Both singers have some history with Weill. For the last several years, Denoke has been creating and performing a series of recital programs that feature Weill; her all-Weill recording, Angela Denoke Sings Kurt Weill (Honigtee HTM 005), was released in 2012. Keenlyside has recorded two of Weill’s four settings of Walt Whitman, “Beat! Beat! Drums!” and “Dirge for Two Veterans,” with pianist Malcolm Martineau on a CD titled Songs of War (Sony 88697944242) released in 2011.
