June 2014 is proving to be a month of Mahagonnys, with new productions at the Staatsoper Berlin, the Tiroler Landesthater in Innsbruck, and the Opera Theatre Company collaborating with the Rough Magic Theatre Company in Dublin. The Dublin production, performed in English, will be staged in the Olympia Theatre, a landmark nineteenth-century music hall. The action takes place throughout the auditorium, so spectators will be in the thick of things in this immersive production, intended to “to evoke a timeless, universal metropolis.” Lynne Parker, Artistic Director of Rough Magic, will direct; Consolata Boyle (nominated for an Academy Award for her work on The Queen) will design the costumes.

The cast consists of Irish singers, led by Julian Hubbard as Jimmy and Claudia Boyle as Jenny. Other roles: Anne Marie Gibbons as Begbick, John Molloy as Trinity Moses, and Ross Scanlon as Fatty the Bookkeeper. The 22-member chorus will likewise be made up of Irish singers. David Brophy conducts.
