Bebe Neuwirth has wowed Broadway audiences in Chicago and television audiences in Cheers, to name just two star turns from a successful and varied career. Now she shows off her solo singing in a week-long engagement at 54 Below, which has become one of Manhattan’s leading cabaret venues almost overnight. With pianist Scott Cady, Neuwirth dips into the Great American Songbook and her new solo CD, Porcelain, released last year. Neuwirth features songs by Kander & Ebb, Frank Loesser, Irving Berlin, Tom Waits, and two songs from Weill and Brecht’s Happy End, “Bilbao-Song” (also on Porcelain) and “Surabaya-Johnny.” Weill fans will remember Neuwirth’s stage show based on Weill’s catalogue, Here Lies Jenny, which played off-Broadway in 2004, chroeographed by Ann Reinking and directed by Roger Rees.

Reviews

“As Bebe Neuwirth exulted in her character’s memories of a rowdy, anything-goes nightclub where ‘the stools at the bar were damp with rye’ on Monday evening at 54 Below, she threw back her head, clutched her hands and closed her eyes, a beatific smile on her face. The number was Brecht-Weill’s ‘Bilbao Song,’ from the 1929 musical ‘Happy End.’ A seedy place where grass grew on the dance floor, pistols blazed, and chairs and brandy bottles flew through the air, that club is certainly not everybody’s idea of a joyful party hangout. But the Boschian picture Ms. Neuwirth conjured in her new show, ‘Stories With Piano No. 4,’ was so vivid, you found yourself plunked down in a place that sounded a lot livelier than Studio 54 in its notorious heyday.”
