Two years after their acclaimed production of Lady in the Dark, Staatsoper Hannover takes on another of Weill’s Broadway shows. Street Scene, the culmination of his pursuit of seamless interplay of song and dialogue and of his dream of creating an opera for Broadway, will take the stage in a new production directed by Bernd Mottl, who also leads My Fair Lady and Kiss Me, Kate at the Staatsoper this season. The cast includes 2010 Lys Symonette Award winner Edward Mout as Buchanan, and Ania Vegry, who portrayed the Toy Fairy in the recently issued world premiere recording of the original version of Zaubernacht, as Rose Maurrant. Brian Davis (Frank Maurrant), Brigitte Hahn (Anna Maurrant), and Ivan Tursic (Sam Kaplan) round out the principal cast (see photos at right). The work will be performed in Stefan Troßbach’s German translation.

Germany has been most hospitable to Street Scene in recent years, with productions in Freiberg, Hagen, Dresden, and Gelsenkirchen (adapted from a production by the Theaterakademie August Everding in Munich) since 2008. In fact, this will be the second Street Scene in the last two years in Hannover, following a successful production at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover.
