Weill’s epic opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny returns to the stage of the Komische Oper Berlin in a highly anticipated new production directed by Barrie Kosky – perhaps the first time that the same director will have productions of both Dreigroschenoper and Aufstieg running simultaneously in the same city. The Aufstieg premiere will be broadcast live and free of charge on Saturday, 2 October at 7:00 PM GMT+2 (Berlin local time) to online audiences worldwide, and will be available afterwards on-demand in the Komische Oper’s digital archive. Kosky’s production will feature General Music Director Ainārs Rubiķis, along with tenor Allan Clayton as Jim Mahoney and soprano Nadja Mchantaf as Jenny Hill.

“To be rehearsing one of my favorite operas in my opera house in Berlin in my last season as Intendant is a thrilling adventure,” reflects Barrie Kosky, who began rehearsals for Aufstieg only three days after opening Dreigroschenoper at the Berliner Ensemble. “This is an absolute joy to be bathed every day in this extraordinary music and to work with my ensemble on this timely, ever contemporary masterpiece.”

More Weill news: Barrie Kosky will also team with Katharine Mehrling for a performance of their all-Weill recital titled Lonely House: Songs and Chansons by Kurt Weill at the Komische Oper Berlin on 24 October. And don’t miss 2016 Lenya Competition Prizewinner Talya Lieberman perform songs, including Weill, at the Komische Oper on 4 October!
