Director Calixto Bieito turned his attention to Weill and Brecht’s Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny in 2011, when his new production premiered at Vlaamse Opera in Ghent. Now his vision of the work will take the stage at Oper Graz in Austria, the co-producer. Bieito’s approach to the piece: “to build up a cruel divertimento about the intrinsic evil of man.” He goes on to acknowledge the influence of Monty Python and The Simpsons on his style and storytelling. The opera is set in an RV campground near the seaside, and the action plays out in a small portion of the stage surrounded by recreational vehicles. (See photos from Ghent below.)
