HK Gruber has been exploring Weill’s music for a long time, as conductor, chansonnier, and promoter. His recordings of shorter works and songs by Weill, Berlin im Licht (Largo 5114), and Die Dreigroschenoper (RCA/BMG 74321 66133-2) remain definitive, and he has a long string of concert and staged Weill performances on his resumé.

Amsterdam is lucky to have him pay a visit on 22 May to conduct Die Dreigroschenoper. Gruber will lead the Asko-Schönberg Ensemble, a crack orchestra whose collaboration on a Dutch tour a couple of years ago has given them extensive experience with Weill’s score, and soloists including Janne Schra (photo bottom right), Sven Ratzke, Betty Schuurman, and Jolentha Zaat. This performance follows concert performances by the London Philharmonic in Paris and London earlier this year, proving that this classic by Weill, Brecht, and Elisabeth Hauptmann has plenty of life in its 85th year.
