Dresden, that great cultural center, is fast becoming a Weill hotbed. Following an acclaimed production of Street Scene last season at the Semperoper, the Staatsschauspiel offers a new production of Die Dreigroschenoper for the 2012-13 season, premiering 14 September with further performances on 20 September, 28 September, and 5 October. The Staatsoperette plans to get in the act next season with the German premiere of The Firebrand of Florence. Dresden seems an especially auspicious locale for such a surge in Weill activity, considering that his first opera, Der Protagonist, premiered there in 1926 and launched his career as a theater composer.
