Shaun Patrick Tubbs

The Kurt Weill Foundation is pleased to report that actor and director Shaun Patrick Tubbs will receive the next Kurt Weill Fellowship from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation. Tubbs will observe director John Fulljames on the forthcoming production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (new translation by Jeremy Sams) opening 10 March at Covent Garden in London. Tubbs already has several acting and directing credits under his belt, and the opportunity experience a new production going up at one of the world’s most prestigious opera houses should be rewarding. Tubbs’s assignment makes him the first international SDCF Observer, a coup that the Weill Foundation is proud to be part of. The next Kurt Weill Fellow will be designated later this year for a major production in 2016.

The Weill Foundation established the fellowship in 2013 in collaboration with the SDC Foundation; those already selected to be part of SDCF’s Observership program are eligible for consideration. We offer funding for early-career directors and choreographers to observe important productions of stage works by Weill or Marc Blitzstein. Last spring, in the first year of the program, SDCF sent observers to two productions of The Threeepenny Opera, one at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia, the other at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York. Paige Kiliany was mentored by director Matthew Gardiner at the Signature, and Michael Leibenluft by director/choreographer Martha Clarke at the Atlantic. Both Kiliany and Leibenluft chronicled their experiences in the Spring 2014 issue of the Kurt Weill Newsletter.
