Tazewell Thompson has directed opera productions throughout the world, including New York, Milan, Madrid, Paris, Tokyo, San Francisco, Montreal, Los Angeles and Vancouver. His production of Kurt Weill's Lost in the Stars premiered at Cape Town Opera and travelled to Glimmerglass Opera. His New York City Opera production of Porgy and Bess, broadcast on PBS Television, "Live from Lincoln Center," received EMMY nominations for Best Director and Best Classical Production. Selected productions: The Tender Land, The Second Hurricane, Don Giovanni, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Norma, Street Scene, Pearl Fishers, Dialogues of the Carmelites, Margaret Garner, Patience, Death in Venice, and Carmen. Not only an acclaimed director for opera and theater (more than sixty plays including world and American premieres), Mr. Thompson is also an award-winning playwright, with commissions from Lincoln Center Theater, South Coast Rep and Peoples Light and Theater Company. His play Constant Star has had 14 national productions, garnering numerous awards. His new play, Mary T. & Lizzy K, will have its world premiere at Arena Stage in Spring 2013.
